A South Korean pastor drowned while trying to cross a swollen river to his church in Mayantoc, Tarlac, police reported Tuesday.

Pastor Wonjun Cho, a minister at Kingsway Fellowship International (KFI), was found dead about three hours after he was swept away by the strong current, according to a report from the Central Luzon regional police.

The incident occurred around 11 a.m. Sunday, while Cho and teacher Arthur Onogon, of Angeles City, Pampanga, were on the way to a KFI church in Brgy. Labney.

The two had to cross a river along the way so Onogon suggested that they pass through a hanging bridge, according to the report.

Cho reportedly refused to use the bridge and tried to cross the river on foot, but was swept away by the strong current.

Members of the KFI church in Brgy. Labney carried out search and retrieval operations and eventually found Cho at Sitio Cayaudan around 1 p.m., the report said. (John Roson)
