Seven persons were killed while nine others were injured when a truck and a passenger van collided head-on and burst to flames, in Titay, Zamboanga Sibugay, Friday night, police said.
Killed were van driver Joel Villamor, truck driver Froilan Dimasuhid, and van passengers Carmela Billones, Estarlito Despi Sr., Delia Espina, Antonia Gantalao, and Diamay Espina, Chief Supt. Napoleon Estilles, Zamboanga Peninsula regional police director, said.
Injured were other passengers Ace dela Cruz, Liza Espina, Violeta Baraquilis, Lolita Espina, Robelyn dela Cruz, Ernesto Cadorna, Nelson Bertulfo, Maria Elena Taghup, and truck helper Mario Moro.
Two of the injured reportedly suffered 3rd degree burns when the van and truck burst to flames, PO2 Lito Olaiva, an officer at the Zamboanga Sibugay Provincial Police operations section, said.
All of the injured were taken to the Sibud County Hospital except Moro, who only suffered slight injuries after being thrown off the truck and into a grassy lot beside the highway, Olaiva said.
The incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. while Dimasuhid was driving the “bongo”-type truck at Purok Fortune, Brgy. Poblacion.
A horse allegedly crossed the road so Dimasuhid veered away, but collided with the incoming Lite Ace van (JVJ-276) driven by Villamor, Olaiva said, citing information from the Titay Police. (John Roson)
