One man was reportedly killed while 26 other people were injured when the truck they were riding on the way home from a fiesta celebration fell into an irrigation canal in Javier, Leyte, on Sunday night, police said.
A certain Zosimo Palban, 59, reportedly died while undergoing treatment at a hospital, Senior Insp. Jimmy Boy Balasanos, Javier police chief, said in a phone interview.
Of those hurt, 10 were brought to the Eastern Visayas Regional Medical Center in Tacloban City and four to the Abuyog District Hospital due to serious injuries. Twelve were taken to different hospitals for bruises and abrasions.
The incident occurred around 7 p.m. while Jay Intero, 26, was driving the Elf truck along a road in Brgy. Caraye.
“Nahulog ‘yung truck sa irrigation canal sa gilid ng kalsada,” Balasanos said, adding that Intero was found to be under the influence of alcohol at the time.
“Galing sila sa Abuyog, naki-piyesta. Hindi ‘yung piyesta ng Abuyog town but a barangay fiesta,” Balasanos said. Abuyog’s town fiesta, known as the Buyogan Festival is celebrated on August 29.
Intero is now under police custody while charges of reckless imprudence resulting to homicide and multiple physical injuries are being prepared. (John Roson)
