An Association of Barangay Captains (ABC) president died while his wife was seriously injured after jumping off the third floor of their hotel in Bato, Leyte, apparently because of tough problems, police said Friday.

Reynaldo Castillo, ABC president of Bontoc, Southern Leyte, and chairman of Brgy. Malbago, died at the hospital because of severe head injuries, Senior Insp. Roger Octaviano, Bato Police chief, said in a phone interview.

Castillo’s wife Marwina is still under observation at a hospital in Ormoc City, Octaviano said.

The incident occurred around 2:45 a.m. Wednesday at the Zam and Jayvee’s Pension House in Bato town proper.

“They (Castillo couple) checked in at a room in the second floor, but went up to the third floor. They had coffee then jumped from the open balcony, where we still saw their cups,” Octaviano said in Filipino.

He said no indications of “foul play” were found and no other people entered the hotel that time.

Investigators also found a suicide note at the couple’s room and learned that the two were facing “tough problems,” Octaviano said.

“The man, as per information from Maasin City, is a suspect in the killing of a woman there, he was charged with murder. We learned that his wife is suffering from stage 4 breast cancer,” Octaviano said.

In their suicide note, the Castillos mentioned names and cellphone numbers of friends who might be able to help with the funeral in case they die, the police official said. (John Roson)
