An elderly man was seriously injured after setting himself on fire at the Magellan’s Cross shrine in Cebu City, early Thursday.
Exequiel Geneston, 77, was brought to the Cebu City Medical Center because of burns on the different parts of the body, city police director Senior Supt. Melvin Buenafe said.
The incident occurred around 7:20 a.m. at the shrine, located in front of the Cebu City Hall along Magallanes st.
Geneston was seen praying before he poured kerosene on his head and body, then lit himself, Buenafe said in a text message.
Bryan Felisida, a city hall guard, told police that he saw a man burning so he fetched a fire extinguisher and doused the flames.
Policemen and members of Cebu’s Emergency Response Unit Foundation brought Geneston to the hospital, where the elderly man is still being treated and observed as of this writing. (John Roson)
