A barangay kagawad (village councilor) in Davao City shot dead his female househelp then killed himself Monday night after the woman, with whom he had an extra-marital affair, decided to part ways with him, police said.

Ryan Kokam, a kagawad of Brgy. 20-B, shot Catherine Baguio on the left cheek with his caliber-.9mm pistol then shot himself on the chest with the same gun, Davao City police director Senior Supt. Ronald dela Rosa said.

Baguio, who suffered a bullet wound that exited at the forehead, expired while being brought to the Southern Philippines Medical Center. Kokam was declared dead by paramedics who rushed to the scene.

The incident occurred around 11 p.m. at a home in Block 50, Brgy. 21-C, where Baguio had just moved in.

The 24-year-old Baguio, a native of Tagum City, transferred from Kokam’s house after the latter’s family discovered that the two had been having an affair, Dela Rosa said.

“Seventeen years old pa lang ‘yung babae diyan na nakatira sa kanila (Kokam) as katulong, tapos nagka-develop sila ng relationship… hanggang sa nag-24 years old ‘yung babae, [nalaman na ng] pamilya ng lalaki na may relasyon sila, pinalayas ‘yung babae,” he said.

Baguio eventually left but Kokam, who was married and had two children, followed her and reportedly asked her to come back.

Renan Boston and Junever Barug, Kokam’s other helpers who went with him to talk to Baguio, told police that they heard the two quarreling, with the woman telling Kokam that she was not backing from her decision.

“Desidido na rin ‘yung babae na makipaghiwalay sa kanya (Kokam). Eh ayaw niya na mawala sa kanya ‘yung babae, ‘yun na, binaril,” Dela Rosa said. (John Roson)
