A radio station in Butuan City was reduced to ashes Thursday morning after allegedly being set on fire by a woman claiming to be a disc jockey’s girlfriend, authorities said.
The fire at the office rented by DXMB FM 95.1 Love Radio spread and also destroyed the third floor of the Montalban Bldg., the second and third floors of the adjacent Luciana Inn, and damaged two rooms of the Almond City Hotel, FO3 Banjo Leyson, arson investigator at the Butuan City Fire Station, said.
Damage was pegged initially at P10 million for the structures alone, as the buildings’ owners have yet to submit an inventory of destroyed properties, Leyson said in a phone interview.
Leyson said their office was informed around 8:12 a.m. that the buildings, all located at the corner of San Jose st. and A.D. Curato st. in Brgy. Urduja, were burning.
Local firefighters and civilian volunteers rushed to the scene and declared “fire out” around 9:40 a.m., after the alarm reached the fourth-highest level, “Task Force Charlie.”
Members of the Butuan City Police detained a certain Rose, a native of Gingoog City, Misamis Oriental, for questioning after receiving information that she started the fire, Leyson said.
“May storya kasi na lumabas na binuhusan daw nitong babae ng flammable liquid ‘yung radio station at sinindihan,” he said.
Rose, in her early 20s, was allegedly suffering from a mental illness and claimed to be the girlfriend of Love Radio disc jockey Benjie Parac, according to Leyson. (John Roson)
