Two armed men were killed when they shot it out with policemen after ignoring a checkpoint in Sta. Cruz, Laguna, early Wednesday, police said.

The shootout occurred around 1:45 a.m. along the National Highway in Brgy. Pagsawitan, Laguna provincial police spokesman Supt. Chito Bersaluna said.

Members of the provincial police’s Intelligence Branch, Public Safety Company, Highway Patrol Group, and Sta. Cruz Police were conducting a checkpoint when two men on a motorcycle passed through, ignoring the roadblock, Bersaluna said.

This prompted the policemen to give chase but the motorcycle-riding men fired at their pursuers, prompting the lawmen to fire back, he said.

Police recovered from the slain men the motorcycle which has no registration plate, a still undetermined type of revolver with four bullets and two fired cartridges, a fragmentation grenade, two lighters, a red bonnet, and two pairs of slippers.

The gunmen, who have yet to be identified, were brought to the Balubayan Funeral Homes for autopsy. (John Roson)
