Three people drowned while two others remain missing after an owner-type jeepney carrying school teachers was swept away by a river in Lobo, Batangas, Wednesday night, police said.

Local police have already recovered the bodies of teachers Emiliana Lontoc, 48; Nelia Guico, 47; and Menchie Gayeta, 33, Batangas provincial police spokesperson Insp. Aleli Buaquen said.

The jeep’s driver Efren Lontoc, 53, and teacher Jona Driz, 29, were still missing as of Thursday noon, Buaquen said, citing a report from the Lobo Police.

A certain Gertrudes Indencio survived.

The incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. while the six were trying to cross the river in Brgy. Jaybanga on board the owner-type jeepney.

“While the vehicle was in the middle of the river, a strong current of water hit it. The occupants stepped out, went up the roof, then jumped to the water,” Buaquen said.

Search for the missing passengers was still ongoing as of this writing. (John Roson)
