A former vice mayor running for a seat in La Union’s provincial board was injured after being shot in Agoo town Monday morning, police said.
Atty. Lazaro Gayo, 62, was brought to the La Union Medical Center due to a bullet wound to the back, Ilocos regional police spokesman Supt. Jovencio Badua said.
Gayo, a resident and former vice mayor of Tubao, is running as 1st District member of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan in next year’s elections, Badua said.
Gayo was shot around 9:10 a.m. in Brgy. Consolacion by a man on a red motorcycle.
The gunman was seen fleeing towards the north after the incident, Badua said, citing field reports.
He said the suspect has been described as having a medium built, short hair, fair complexion, wearing a white t-shirt, and was estimated to be aged 35 or older.
Agoo police launched pursuit operations and requested lawmen in neighboring towns to put up checkpoints so the suspect can be captured, Badua said. (John Roson)
