Unidentified men entered and snatched at least P1.3 million worth of cash and jewelries from a department store in Butuan City by boring a hole from the adjacent hotel, police said.

The robbery at the Unicity General Merchandise along P. Burgos st., Brgy. Sikatuna was discovered only 9 a.m. Monday, when employees opened shop, Caraga regional police spokesman Supt. Martin Gamba said.

Lalaine Delos Reyes, a supervisor at the department store, told police the robbers carted away four days’ worth of sales amounting to P1.110 million, as well as P200,000 worth of gold jewelries owned by the manager’s mother.

Citing initial investigation, Gamba said the robbers checked in at Room 210 of the adjacent Windsor Hotel past 9 a.m. Sunday.

Using various tools, the robbers bore a hole on the concrete wall to enter the department store’s first floor, he said.

The robbers then proceeded to the manager’s office on the second floor, where they forcibly opened two vaults containing the cash and jewelries, Gamba said.

Found at the scene Monday morning were two hydraulic jacks, a manual drill, hacksaw frame and blades, magnetic screwdrivers, and a claw bar.

Some P177,809 cash – which the robbers surprisingly left – was also found.

Authorities are now using footages of the hotel’s closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera to identify the robbers, Gamba said. (John Roson)
