Two fraternity members have been arrested for allegedly raping and killing a 16-year-old high school student in Boracay Island, Aklan, last year, police said Monday.
Rodel Gelito and Joseph Onate, both members of the Alpha Kappa Rho fraternity, were arrested at their residences in Brgys. Balinghayapak and Pinaungon on Thursday, PNP Criminal Investigation and Detection Group chief Dir. Samuel Pagdilao said.
Operatives of the CIDG-Western Visayas carried out the arrests on a warrant issued by Judge Bienvenido Barrios, of the Kalibo Regional Trial Court Branch 3, Pagdilao said.
Fraternity initiation rites led by Gelito and Onate led to the rape and killing of Aprillyn Tana, Senior Supt. Eddie Benigay, regional CIDG chief, said.
Tana and seven other teenagers reportedly joined the initiation rites, which were held on May 27, 2011.
She was found dead, with severe injuries to the head and without underwear, three days later in a cave in Sitio Lapuslapos, Brgy. Balabag. (John Roson)
