Armed men shot dead a police investigator in Sto. Tomas, La Union, Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.

SPO2 Julius Espiritu, assigned at the Sto. Tomas Police Station, was driving his motorcycle in Brgy. Cupang around 4:30 p.m. when shot by still unidentified assailants, Ilocos regional police spokesman Supt. Jovencio Badua said.

Espiritu was later brought to the La Union Medical Center in Agoo, but he expired along the way, Badua said.

Policemen who rushed to the scene found nine caliber-.9 mm shells, he said.

Espiritu’s fellow investigators in Sto. Tomas are now reviewing the cases he handled to determine the assailants’ identities and motive, Badua said.

“Job-related kasi investigator siya (Espiritu), tinitingnan ang mga kasong isinampa niya as investigator,” he said.

Recently, the PNP warned that crimes may rise in La Union and 14 other provinces due to the upcoming midterm elections. (John Roson)
