A barangay chairman running for mayor was killed while two other people, including a child, were injured after being shot by still unidentified men in Marcos, Ilocos Norte, on Saturday afternoon, police said.

Alfredo Arce, chairman og Brgy. Fortuna, succumbed to several bullet wounds, Ilocos regional police spokesman Supt. Jovencio Badua said.

Arce was running for mayor in Marcos as an independent candidate, according to the Commission on Elections’ list of candidates.

The incident occurred around 1:30 p.m., while Arce was at the home of the Macatiag family in Brgy. Fortuna, Badua said.

It was not immediately known what Arce was doing at that time.

A certain Apoljoy Joaquin, 21, and Karljayan Agustin, 5, also got hit in the shooting and were both taken to the Sta. Teresita Hospital, Badua said.

Authorities are still trying to determine the identities and motive of the assailants, who were last seen escaping towards the north on a motorcycle.

The incident is the second gun attack on a mayoralty candidate of Marcos this year.

On February 4, incumbent Mayor Salvador Pillos was shot and injured while inspecting a construction project in Brgy. Lydia.

Pillos is seeking re-election under the Lakas Christian and Muslim Democrats party, according to the Comelec.

Before Saturday’s shooting, the mayoralty race was a three-way contest among Arce, Pillos, and Arsenio Agustin, of the Nacionalista Party. (John Roson)
