A 17-year-old high school student was killed while 11 other persons, mostly students, were injured when the tricycle they were riding fall into a ravine in Tabaco City, Albay, Thursday afternoon, police said.

Marilou Broniosa, a 4th year student at the Bantayan National High School, expired while being brought to the Ziga Memorial District Hospital, Bicol regional police spokesman Supt. Renato Bataller said.

Two other people are still confined at the same hospital, one at the Sabredo General Hospital, while eight others, including the tricycle driver, have been transferred to the Bicol Regional Training and Teaching Hospital in Legazpi City due to severe injuries.

The incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. in the mountainous area of Brgy. Oras, about 9 to 10 kilometers from Tabaco City proper.

The tricycle had just fetched the students from the Bantayan National High School and was bringing them home to Brgy. Sua-Igot, when one of its tires suddenly exploded.

“Pumutok ‘yung gulong niya at medyo pababa pa ‘yung lugar, kaya hindi na na-control ng driver ‘yung manibela at bumulusok po ito dun sa bangin na may lalim na tatlong tao, siguro mga 15 feet, at bumagsak dun sa mga batuhan,” Bataller said in a phone interview. (John Roson)

A provincial board member of Sorsogon and his driver were injured when the motorcycle they were riding crashed into an improvised “barricade” in Prieto Diaz town, police reported.

Board Member Benito Doma and Frenie Inolba, 28, were brought by a concerned citizen to the Sorsogon Doctors Hospital in Sorsogon City, according to a report from the provincial police.

The incident occurred in Brgy. Calao around 11 p.m. Tuesday, but was reported to police only the next day.

Doma and Inolba were riding a motorcycle (EE-1368) on the way to Sorsogon City, when the vehicle hit a 16-foot long post and crashed into broken bottles of liquor placed at the center of the National Highway, according to the report.

Investigators have yet to determine who placed the “barricade,” but Chief Insp. Reynaldo Gayta, Prieto Diaz Police chief, said he does not believe the perpetrators were targeting Doma.

“Taga dito naman siya (Doma), kilala siya dito. Tingin namin mga kabataan lang ito, nag-inuman, nagaway-away at kinalat doon sa kalsada ‘yung mga basag na bote. Wala kaming nakikita na related sa politika,” Gayta said in a phone interview. (JOHN ROSON)

Nine people were killed while at least nine others were injured when a passenger bus collided with a motorcycle and fuel tanker in Muñoz City, Nueva Ecija, early Wednesday, police said.

Killed on the spot were the three vehicles’ drivers, identified as Ryan Camaging, Leoncio Pajarillo, and Sylvino Marzo, Chief Insp. Karen Clark, Central Luzon regional police spokeswoman, said.

Also killed were Pajarillo’s wife Evangeline, who was riding with him in the motorcycle, as well as bus passengers Donatella Aquino, of Piat, Cagayan; Marife Bondoc, of Tanza, Cavite; and three still unidentified females.

The fatalities were all taken to the Munoz Funeral Parlor in Brgy. Bantog West, Clark said.

Some of those injured were identified as Rolando Cotanes, of Piat; Juan Taguilan, of Enrile; Elvino Bajinang, also of Cagayan; Alama Sansano, of Bayombong, Nueva Viscaya; Maria Rowena Dacanay, of Bagabag; Arthur Solinas of Santa Maria, Isabela; Araceli Medina, and Jone Audalang.

They were brought to the Paulino Garcia Memorial Research Hospital in Cabanatuan City, San Jose General Hospital in San Jose City, and the CLSU Infirmary Hospital in Muñoz.

Other bus passengers, who were unhurt or sustained only minor injuries, decided to proceed with their travel and were fetched by other passing buses, Clark said.

The incident occurred around 2:30 a.m., while Camaging was driving the Victory Liner bus (CWR-195) along the Maharlika Highway in Purok Curva, Brgy. Bantug.

Camaging was driving the bus towards the south when it hit the back of the Honda Wave motorcycle (YZ-5358) driven by Pajarillo, causing the latter and his wife to fall on the right shoulder of the road, Clark said, citing results of investigation by the Muñoz City Police.

The bus driver steered to the left to avoid hitting the motorcycle further, but collided head-on with Marzo’s Isuzu gasoline tanker (XMD-771) instead, Clark said.

Both the bus and fuel tanker sustained heavy damages on the front left sides. (John Roson)
