The Philippine Air Force grounded its UH-1H (Huey) helicopters after one unit got involved in an accident in Cagayan de Oro City on Wednesday.

The Huey unit carrying the number 518 “rolled over” while it was about to take off from Camp Evangelista, headquarters of the Army’s 4th Infantry Division, around 3:30 p.m. Air Force spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Enrico Canaya said.

The helicopter has two pilots and two crew members at the time, but no one was reported injured, Canaya said in a text message.

He said the helicopter was damaged, though the extent is not immediately known.

The helicopter was supposed to return to the Air Force’s 10th Tactical Operations Group base at the Lumbia Airport after transporting 4th ID commander Major General Oscar Lactao from the 402nd Brigade headquarters in Butuan City, said Major Ezra Balagtey, Armed Forces Eastern Mindanao Command public affairs officer.

Authorities arrested an alleged New People’s Army (NPA) financial and logistics officer in Cadiz City, Negros Occidental, Tuesday night.

Sarah Alvarez was arrested by members of the 62nd Infantry Battalion and police around 6:15 p.m., Maj. Enrico Ileto, spokesman of the Army’s 3rd Infantry Division, said.

The arrest was carried on a warrant for murder issued by the Cadiz City Regional Trial Court Branch 60, he said.

The case stemmed from a clash that killed 1Lt. Archie Polenzo, of the 62nd IB, in March 2010.

Alvarez, who uses the alias “Olsen,” is also allegedly involved in the robbery at a fishpond in Sagay City last year, Ileto said.

Col. Oscar Lactao, commander of the 303rd Brigade, said Alvarez’s arrest will “cripple” the NPA Northern Negros Front’s “extortion activities.”

“Her (Alvarez) significance is evident with her direct links with financial and logistics bureaus of the NPA movement within Northern Negros and the island as a whole. She plays an important role in the Northern Negros Front’s extortion activities. Malaking kawalan sya sa NNF,” Lt. Col. Efren Morados, commander of the 62nd IB, said.

Alvarez’s arrest came hours after government troops killed Julia Pacheco Tabat, an alleged NPA medical officer, in a clash in Candoni, Tuesday morning. (John Roson)
